Advocacy Positions

To improve public policy, WITESOL takes official positions on a broad range of issues related to the field of English language teaching.  These positions are published as statements and letters, and they become official when the WITESOL board approves them.

December 8, 2023: In this position statement, WITESOL co-signed a letter in a joint effort between WITESOL and WIABE to advocate for change in Act 20, Wisconsin’s early literacy law. The letter is in response to the inequities the law creates for multilingual learners and bilingual/dual language/ESL programs in Wisconsin. 

March 29, 2021: In this position statement, WITESOL wrote to request the support and adoption of the 2020 WIDA English Language Development Standards for the state of Wisconsin.

January 12, 2021: In this position statement, WITESOL wrote to urge the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to apply for federal waivers for ACCESS for ELs testing requirements during the 2020-21 school year due to covid.
